BUILDING PEOPLE POWER IN OREGON

OREGON ACTION IS ONE OF THE MOST POWERFUL SOCIAL, RACIAL AND ECONOMIC JUSTICE ORGANIZATIONS IN THE STATE OF OREGON

OUR GOAL IS TO BE THE MOST POWERFUL

Developing Leaders
Oregon Action takes pride in developing outstanding leaders from communities who are traditionally on the downside of power — people who are low-income, women, people of color, immigrants and those with felony backgrounds — building their skills and ability to strengthen their community.

Organizing People
Oregon Action believes power rests in the hands of the people. We organize people to work together and exert their power to win progressive changes in the policies that shape their lives.

Taking Action
Oregon Action takes direct action to influence decisionmakers. Through phone calls, letters, personal visits by leaders, organized rallies and marches, we make our demands known and hold public leaders accountable.

Building Power
Oregon Action believes in people power — and that includes buiding the power of our leaders. leaders decide what issues we work on, develop the strategies to win the campaigns, meet directly with decision-makers and represent Oregon Action in the media. Power is built during elections.

Making a Difference
Oregon Action works on issues that profoundly influence people’s lives — jobs, health care, housing, hunger, criminal justice, taxes and an entire range of social and economic justice issues that touch all of us and affect our quality of life.

Promoting Progressive Values
Oregon Action believes all people have value. We have a shared responsibility to help each other to thrive. Government is best-equipped to carry that mutual responsibility — when the people have the power to hold government accountable.

Social and Economic Justice
We are always working on several campaigns that advance social, economic and racial justice. Priorities for 2009 are eliminating racial profiling in the Portland Police Bureau, working for passage of the Oregon House Bill 2009.

Your Role in Oregon Action

Oregon Action is free to choose issues based on their importance to our members — not to funders — because 75% of our funding comes from our membership. This extraordinary support gives us more freedom and flexibility than most nonprofits.

Some members choose to play a more active role: attending meetings and participating in actions and forums to advance our campaigns. many of those decide to take advantage of our trainings and leadership programs to build their skills and become leaders of oregon action. How active you want to be is up to you.

Your membership makes us successful!
